Out-of-state attorneys seeking admission to the California State bar must pass the California Bar Exam.
As of June 11, 2025, the California Supreme Court has issued a significant ruling in case number S291047, directing the State Bar to implement additional remedies for applicants affected by the technical failures during the administration of the February 2025 California Bar exam…supreme.courts.ca.gov
The Court’s ruling does not alter the fundamental requirement for all attorneys seeking admission to the California Bar. All applicants, including those from out of state, must pass the California Bar Exam. The Court has consistently upheld this standard, most recently in its October 2024 decision, where it rejected proposals for a Portfolio Bar Exam and reciprocity with other jurisdictions.
For out-of-state attorneys, this means that despite prior licensure in another state, you must take and pass the California Bar Exam to practice law in California. The State Bar does not offer reciprocity or accept bar exam scores from other jurisdictions.
